What is an IUD?

Intrauterine devices, commonly known as IUDs, are a form of cost-effective and highly reliable contraception that can last 5 to 10 years.

For this reason, they are often referred to as a ‘set and forget’ contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy, with the benefit of being reversible.

There are four IUD types are available in Australia, each with different benefits and use cases. Your doctor will discuss each with you and select the best one for your needs.

We can perform the procedure in the clinic.

Highly effective (over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy) and as part of hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) in menopause.

Long-lasting (5 to 10 years)

Reversible (fertility returns quickly after removal)

Low-maintenance (no need to remember daily pills)

Cost-effective over time

Hormonal IUDs may reduce menstrual bleeding and cramps

Copper IUDs provide a non-hormonal option for those who prefer or require it

The IUD Insertion Process

You will be required to attend three appointments to get an IUD:

Appointment 1

The suitability assessment.

During this appointment, your doctor will explain everything about IUDs, including the risks and benefits. They will also arrange pre-insertion testing and provide you with the device script. Please allow up to 45 minutes for this appointment.

Appointment 2

The procedure.

At this appointment, your doctor will insert the IUD. Please allow 1 hour for this appointment.

Appointment 3

Post-insertion review.

Typically scheduled two weeks after the procedure, this quick appointment will involve your doctor checking the device and discussing how you feel post-procedure. Please allow 15 minutes for this appointment unless you have concerns, in which case, book a double appointment.

What to Expect After IUD Insertion

  • Some cramping and spotting in the first few days to weeks after insertion is normal.
  • Avoid tampons, sex, strenuous exercise, baths and saunas for a 48 hours after insertion.
  • Check the strings regularly and let us know if you have any unusual symptoms.

Please note that results may vary for individual patients. Your doctor will guide you through the process and what to expect for your circumstances.

IUD Removal

When you want to have your IUD removed, whether it’s due to its expiration date or you’re planning to conceive, we can help you in our clinic.
