How the Vasectomy Procedure Works
During a non-scalpel vasectomy, the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) are blocked, preventing sperm from mixing with semen. Sperm cells continue to be produced by the testicles but are eventually absorbed by the body.
This means that while you’ll still produce semen and be able to ejaculate normally, the semen will not contain sperm, making pregnancy virtually impossible.
The Step-by-Step Process
Local Anaesthetic
A fine needle is used to administer a local anaesthetic, ensuring you’re comfortable throughout the procedure.
Access
A small opening of 2-4 millimetres in size is made in the centre of the scrotum below the penis. This tiny opening eliminates the need for stitches, as it will close rapidly and heal independently.
Blocking the Vas Deferens
The vas deferens are located through this small opening and are then cut and sealed.
Completion
The procedure typically takes just 15-20 minutes, and patients can usually drive themselves home afterwards.

- Wearing supportive underwear for a few days
- Avoiding strenuous activity for about a week
- Abstaining from sexual activity for at least a week
It’s important to note that the vasectomy is not immediately effective. You’ll need to use alternative contraception until a semen analysis confirms the absence of sperm, typically about 12 weeks after the procedure. A semen test is crucial to ensure that all sperm have cleared and that contraception can be safely discontinued.
