  • Treatment Room & Nursing Services
Diabetes Clinic Iron Infusion This is our most popular service in the treatment room. Iron infusion is a treatment option for people who are deficient in iron, is symptomatic because of their iron deficiency (e.g. tiredness), and who are either unable to absorb, or unable to tolerate oral iron supplements (due to its side effects such as nausea or constipation) FAQ: 1. What is our Iron Infusion Protocol? 2-3 appointments are required 1st appointment is a suitability assessment carried out by the GP from our practice. This is to ensure that an iron infusion is indicated for you in your situation, and that you do not have any contra-indications to receiving an iron infusion. You are also informed about the potential risks, as well as the benefits of having an iron infusion. 2nd appointment: Day of iron infusion. Please allow 30 minutes for this procedure. 3rd appointment: Repeat Iron level to ensure it is in the normal range. 2. What if you have been referred by your GP from outside of our practice? We accept referrals from GPs from outside of our practice. You will receive appointments 1 and 2 of our Practice’s iron infusion protocol (as outlined in Q1). However, any post-infusion follow up can be carried out with your regular GP. 3. Why do I need a suitability assessment by a GP at our Practice, when I have already had an assessment performed by my GP (at another practice)? One of our Practice’s GP will take over responsibility for your care while you are receiving the iron infusion. As such, they themselves need to carry out the suitability assessment and ensure you are fully informed about the risks and benefits and provide consent to receive this treatment. They will be the clinician responsible for any concerns that you may experience during the procedure. They can report back to your GP at your request also. Any post infusion care onwards can be carried out by your usual GP. 4. How long does the procedure take? Please allow 30 minutes on the day of the iron infusion. Ensure you are well hydrated on the day to ensure ease of vein access. 5. Will my GP be informed about my procedure. Yes, at your request only. Please tell the Doctor on duty if this is your wish.
